Environmental Health Perspectives Vol. 32, p. 1, 1979

Preface In May 1978 a conference on biostatistics in cancer research was convened in Hiroshima, Japan. The meeting was sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Cancer Research Program of the National Cancer Institute, with supplemental support from the Naito Foundation. The conference was followed by an informal conference at Fukuoka University, and arrangements were made for the U.S. participants to visit various universities and institutions in Japan. This was to supplement the exchange of information between the two countries. We are grateful to all those who cooperated in the conference and also in the post-conference affairs. Some papers read in the informal conference were added to the conference manuscripts. The conference proceedings in this volume of ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PERSPECTIVES provide an introductory overview of statistical methods applied in cancer research in the United States and Japan and may prove useful to those involved in cancer studies and contribute to the exchange of ideas among scientists in the two countries.
