PREFACE PREFACE

Preface to Clinical Neurosurgery Volume 62, Proceedings of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons 2014 Annual Meeting The 64th Annual Meeting of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons was held in Boston, Massachusetts from October 18 to 22, 2014. Volume 62 of Clinical Neurosurgery represents the official compilation of the invited scientific manuscripts from the plenary sessions, the Presidential address by Dr Daniel K. Resnick, and biographic and bibliographic information of the Honored Guest, Dr Edward C. Benzel. Dr Ashwini D. Sharan served as the Annual Meeting Chair and Dr Elad I. Levy as the Scientific Program Chair. The theme of this year’s Annual Meeting was A Question of Balance and focused on the competing challenges faced by neurosurgeons in their everyday practice. The CNS was also honored and delighted to partner with the Israel Neurosurgical Society, led by president Zeev Feldman. Dr Resnick eloquently delivered the Presidential address and discussed the importance in education of neurosurgeons-in-training on balancing the many aspects of a neurosurgical practice, stressing the importance of identifying signs of burnout, and warning us that burnout may lead to inappropriate behavior in the profession. The honored guest this year was Dr Edward C. Benzel from the Cleveland Clinic. Dr Benzel is the Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. His clinical practice and current research focuses on disorders and biomechanics of the spine. He has authored 10 textbooks, served as an editor for 28 texts, contributed to more than 370 book chapters, and has numerous research publications, highlighting his outstanding past and continuing contributions to neurosurgical research and education. It has been our distinct honor and privilege to serve as Co-Editors of Clinical Neurosurgery over the year. We would all like to especially thank Krista Jarrell, the Peer Review Editor from the Neurosurgery Editorial Office, for her unparalleled dedication to this volume. We would also like to thank our outstanding associate editors below for their volunteer time and dedication to the critical peer review process. We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr Nelson Oyesiku, Editor-in-Chief of Neurosurgery, for his unrelenting support and advice. We welcome Dr Nathan R.
