Editor’s Note

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others.” -Cicero

It is my great pleasure to report that Practical Radiation Oncology (PRO) has been selected for indexing in MEDLINE! The National Library of Medicine’s selection process is a rigorous one, involving peers from outside of the discipline who act as external experts and review the journal’s content for scientific quality, editorial quality, and the scope and coverage of the journal. In the current environment of scholarly publishing, to be selected this early in the life of a journal is a remarkable achievement. Listing in MEDLINE will ensure that the content of PRO is available to authors across the globe. PRO is fully indexed in MEDLINE beginning with the January-February 2014 issue, but all content published in the first 3 issues will be available through PubMed. The credit for this success belongs to many people, more than I can list. The editorial team at Elsevier, Mary Heffner in particular, has been very supportive of the new journal and their continued commitment to PRO has been vital. Katherine Egan Bennett and Calley Grace have worked very hard over the last 3 years to ensure that the editorial process is efficient and fair for all stakeholders. The Editorial Board, both current editors and others who have since tried in vain

to “retire,” has provided sound advice and guidance and developed a cadre of talented reviewers who volunteer their time to make a peer-reviewed journal possible. I also want to thank ASTRO. Not everyone gets the opportunity to start a new journal and I'm very grateful for the trust they placed in me. Finally, the most important participants in this success are the authors of the papers submitted to the journal. It is a risk for an author to submit a paper to a journal that is not indexed in MEDLINE, and I am very grateful that these authors’ work has been validated by not only their peers in radiation oncology but also by those at the National Library of Medicine. Thanks to all. Over the next several months, along with Editorial Board and staff, I will be reviewing all aspects of PRO. I am keen to incorporate more content that addresses important domains of radiation oncology beyond the original scientific paper or review articles that are uncommonly included in radiation oncology journals. Potential new subjects include biomedical ethics, communication skills, innumeracy, and even creative writing. I encourage you to contact PRO ([email protected]) with any ideas about content that you are eager to see included.
