Introduction
Physical activity and ischemic heart disease are interconnected in two interesting but still controversial aspects. Physical activity is widely recommended in both primary and secondary prevention of ischemic heart disease. On the other hand, physical activity has also been reported to be a factor predisposing patients with ischemic heart disease to instantaneous death [5]. The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of preceding physical activity on survival time in men with acute ischemic heart attack.
The present study, which covers all men suffering acute ischemic heart disease attack during the period 1st January 1970 through February 1971, is based on information gathered from the Helsinki Ischemic Heart Disease Register. The design of the Register as well as the outlines and principles followed were those proposed by the WHO and are consistent with the ischemic heart disease program. The working procedure for the Register has been described in detail previously [13]. A special record form which included questions on physical activity at the time of or immediately before, within a day and within a week before the onset of acute ischemic heart disease attack was completed for each new case registered. The interviews were carried out by two nurses belonging to the staff of the Register. The interviews of hospitalized patients were usually made at the hospitals as soon as the patient's status allowed. If the patients had died the closest relative (if known)
