Pediatric Ophthalmology

Preface

Mary Lou McGregor, MD Editor

I relied on many wonderful colleagues to contribute to this edition of Pediatric Clinics of North America. I would like to acknowledge all of them for their expertise and dedication to the field of pediatric ophthalmology. Although the theme of this issue is, “What Is New in Pediatric Ophthalmology,” the theme of the collection of authors was “Reconnecting with Friends and Colleagues.” I am sincerely indebted to all of them. Dr Leonard Nelson was the guest editor of the “Pediatric Ophthalmology” issue of Pediatric Clinics of North America in 1993. He emphasized the “importance of careful clinical evaluation” as the foundation for treating pediatric ophthalmologic disorders. The same is true twenty years later. Other fields of ophthalmology can often rely on new advanced technology to make a diagnosis, but it will always be a challenge to get a two- or a five-year-old child to cooperate with an exam or a test; therefore, the pediatrician and ophthalmologist must often rely on their clinical skills. The ophthalmologist and pediatrician must continue to work as a team in taking care of children with eye disease. I would like to thank Casey Jackson and Kerry Holland, editors at Elsevier; Dr Bonita Stanton, consulting editor; along with all of the publishing staff at Elsevier for their patience and help. They are amazing at what they do, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them. I want to thank my family for their patience and much needed technological help. I would like to acknowledge Drs Hiram Hardesty, William Annable, Gary Rogers, Don Bremer, and John Lee. These ophthalmologists were patient enough to train me in the field of pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, but more importantly, they inspired me to want to teach.
