Passages 2015 In 2014, the journal has continued its efforts to attract datasets for virtual publishing using the Biolucida Cloud technology with a number of upcoming publications that will share their extended data with our readership. We have also been organizing additional special issues after a first issue was released at the very end of 2013 as a tribute to the late Gary van Hoesen. A special issue on stem cells, edited by Dustin Wakeman and Jeffrey Kordower, appeared in August, regrouping 13 original articles and reviews focusing on the derivation and characterization of multipotent neural stem cells, differentiated neurons derived from embryonic stem cells, and induced pluripotent stem cells, and on how these modern approaches provide models to investigate complex mechanisms of brain disorders, making cell replacement therapies in many neurodegenerative disorders a possibility. Other special issues are in preparation for 2015, one prepared by Luiz Pessoa and Leslie Ungerleider on brain imaging, and two others stemming from conferences. These will feature new research on the mechanisms of emotions and on modern trends in our understanding of the evolution of the cerebral cortex. These special publications, as well as topical reviews, all prepared with the quality standards that characterize our journal, interestingly, are taking into consideration the functional anatomy of the human brain and of its disorders. In an age of cellbased and animal models, the study of the functional anatomy and pathology of the nervous system in the species for which it matters the most is certainly not to be neglected or forgotten, and certainly represents a pole of major interest for the Journal of Comparative Neurology. In this context, this first issue of 2015 opens with a commentary on the “missing numbers” in Korbinian Brodmann’s map of the human cerebral cortex, which we hope will be of some help in resolving some of the controversies around a cortical parcellation adopted nowadays by most investigators of the human brain. The Passages editorial gives a yearly opportunity to consider changes and transitions. As always, I wish especially to recognize the remarkable work of our 10 Associate Editors and our Editor Emeritus, for their diligent and expert handling of the manuscripts that come every week to their desk, and of our Publishing Editor at Wiley, Matthew Giampoala, who indefatigably manages, promotes, and improves the journal. I must also thank Serena Tan, who is closing her first year as ManC 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. V

aging Editor, for her most efficient work handling all of the submissions, serving as a liaison with many authors, representing the journal at conferences, helping with the organization of special issues, and keeping the antibody database user-friendly and complete. While continuing to update immunogen sequences and amino acid positions in the database, Serena also spearheaded the journal’s participation in the Resource Identification Initiative, which promotes research resource identification, discovery, and reuse, to facilitate the process of identifying antibodies and other key resources reported in the literature, such as model organisms, databases, and software tools. Every year the Editors vote on nominating new members or re-electing some of the previous Board members. In 2014 we had 8 positions reaching their 4-year terms and it is with great pleasure that we invited Deanna Benson, Tomas H€okfelt, Michael Shipley, and Paul Taghert back to serve another term. We welcome Enrica Strettoi, Giuseppe Luppino, Andrew Huberman, and Robert Vertes as new members in 2015 and look forward to their contributions during their time on the Board. We also thank Andreas Burkhalter, Joel Elmquist, Elizabeth Grove, and David Hopkins, for their outstanding service to the journal and hope that they may join us again in the future. It is also my particular pleasure to mention here that at the Cajal Club Social during the Society for Neuroscience Meeting in Washington, Jon Kaas, a member of our Editorial Board, was honored together with his long-time colleague Ray Guillery as a recipient of the Sanford L. Palay Award in Structural Neuroscience. I presented the awards to them on the behalf of our publisher, John Wiley & Sons, and the Journal of Comparative Neurology, for their invaluable and seminal contributions to comparative neuroscience, many of which have been published in our journal. Finally, we must extend our thanks to our many colleagues, who participated in the peer-review process of manuscripts for the journal in 2014. Without their selfless dedication and timeliness, and the depth of their comments, our journal could not maintain the high standards of quality for which it is famous. Patrick R. Hof, MD Editor-in-Chief
