INTRODUCTION The Working Group set up by the Chief Medical Officers of England and Wales under the chairmanship of Sir David Cox reported on the short-term prediction of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in England and Wales using data to June 19881 . The Cox Report was followed by a more technical report published by the Royal Society, which used data to March 19892. The Group, now under the chairmanship of Professor Day, produced its most recent report, published by the Public Health Laboratory Service in their Communicable Diseases Report for January 1990, using data to September 198
