DR. 0. H. D I J K S T R A may be considered the Nestor of Dutch pathologists. His recent death marked the end of a life devoted to his profession and full of activity in many and various respects. He received his medical education at the University of Amsterdam where he graduated in 1924. His doctor’s thesis on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis was accepted in 1929. After his training in pathology he settled down in Haarlem as one of the first Dutch pathologists outside the university institutes. He remained faithful to Haarlem till his death. Dijkstra’s publications, mainly in Dutch medical journals, and the papers he delivered to the Dutch Pathological Society reflected, by their wide range of topics, the experience gained over a long period in a large pathology practice. He was also active in other respects in our Society. He acted as president from 1956 to 1961. He was among those who established the close relations between the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland and the Dutch Pathological Society and was made a honorary member of both societies in 1963 and 1968 respectively. His retirement in 1965, far from indicating the end of his work and of his professional career, opened up new and unexpected possibilities. He was asked to act as consultant pathologist at the Department of Pathological Anatomy of the University of Amsterdam, with the special task of training the registrars in the autopsy room. During the next five years he carried out this task with all his ability, enthusiasm and loyalty but also in accordance with his character. Strict and punctual, he would always be on time and he expected the same from others. Rules were rigidly observed and discipline was a prerequisite for the students attending the autopsies. In spite of this, he was respected for his honesty and many pathologists in training have profited greatly from his wide experience. Dijkstra had many interests outside his daily work. He was active in several professional and other committees and organisations. He took up sketching rather late in life and showed much talent. He often combined this with his interest in history, as witnessed by many attractive drawings of historical buildings, particularly in Haarlem. At the request of the Dutch Pathological Society on the occasion of its golden jubilee, he composed a treatise on the J. PATH.-VOL.

previous generation of Dutch pathologists, who tended to emerge in a very characteristic and humorous fashion. His death, following a stroke, means a great loss, particularly to his wife and children, but also to the community of Dutch pathologists.
