A clone RDP1. 1 (1) containing the Rhesus monkey IL-3 (RhIL-3) isolated from a X Charon 40 library by screening with radiolabeled human IL-3 (hIL-3) cDNA (2). A 4.1 kb EcoRI fragment of RDP1.1 included the RhIL-3 promoter region containing regulatory elements, identical to those of the hIL-3 gene (3), as well as 5 exons which encode RhIL-3. The isolated gene encodes functional RhIL-3 (1, 4). Comparative studies in vitro between hIL-3 and RhIL-3 produced by B. licheniformis showed that RhIL-3 was about 100-fold more effective in stimulating Rhesus monkey bone marrow cells (1). Similar data were obtained from in vivo studies (4). The availability of RhIL-3 enables further preclinical studies in Rhesus monkeys with homologous IL-3.
