NMC consultation: make your views count From 2016 you may have to complete 40 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) every three years to remain on the register. You may be asked to submit five reflective accounts on how you learned from patients’ feedback. And you may have to demonstrate that you are complying with a new code of professional conduct, which includes a duty of candour and guidance on the responsible use of social media. MAKE YOURSELF A CUPPA, LOG ON AND TELL THE NMC WHAT YOU THINK…

All of these measures have been put out to consultation this week. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) wants to hear your views on its revised code and on its detailed plans for revalidation – the system to assess whether registered nurses and midwives are keeping their knowledge and skills up to date and remain fit to practise. The draft new code contains the ‘duty of candour’ demanded by Robert Francis in his second report into unacceptable care at Stafford Hospital. The NMC will expect all registrants to give a ‘constructive and honest response to anyone who complains about the care they receive, including an apology where appropriate’. Other changes include a demand that nurses must ensure that ‘the fundamentals of basic care are adhered to and delivered effectively and compassionately’. It will become a nurse’s individual professional responsibility to ensure that their patients are kept in clean and hygienic conditions. In line with the times, there is also a new clause on the use of social media. No longer will nurses and midwives be allowed to refer to employers, colleagues or patients (past or present) in a way that could identify them on Facebook, Twitter or other social media. You have until August 11 to have your say. On first viewing, the online form is easy to understand and complete. So make yourself a cuppa, log on to www.nmc-uk.org and tell the NMC what you think.
