A scheme designed to help nurses and other healthcare workers lose weight will be piloted at a London trust as part of a government drive to improve the health of NHS staff. The pilot will be introduced at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, before being rolled out by health service employers across England. Staff members with a body mass index of 25 and over will be eligible to sign up for one of three weight-loss programmes. The programme they

choose will depend on the amount of weight they need to lose. Level 1 is a 12-week group programme delivered by Slimming World. Level 2 is also 12 weeks and is delivered by weight management company MoreLife and involves cognitive behavioural therapy, which focuses on the individual’s relationship with food. Level 3 is aimed at those with complex medical needs who want to lose 5-10 per cent of their body weight. NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens said: ‘The NHS is starting to

Nurse Awards’ finalists meet the judges The 32 finalists for this year’s Nursing Standard Nurse Awards have been judged by a panel of nursing professionals in a bid to identify the winners. The finalists from each category gave a ten-minute presentation and answered questions. At the end of the two-day judging process, the panel, chaired by RCN president Cecilia Anim, decided the winners of each category and the recipient of the overall Nursing Standard Nurse of the Year award.

Nursing Standard editor Graham Scott, one of the judges, said: ‘The standard is extremely high this year and it was inspirational to listen to the presentations.’ The winners will be revealed at an awards ceremony at The Savoy in London on May 1. practise what we preach – helping our staff get healthier and prevent illness. The H in NHS stands for health and that is going to require a far bigger emphasis on prevention.’ In October, Mr Stevens published a Five Year Forward View of the NHS that set out plans to improve the health and wellbeing of staff. Department of Health figures show that about 700,000 of the NHS’s 1.3 million staff are either overweight or obese. Director of people and organisational development at Imperial College Jayne Mee said: ‘The health and wellbeing of our staff is a top priority and we are thrilled to be able to offer on-site weight management support. ‘The pilot will not only have a positive effect on the health and wellbeing of our workforce, but will also translate into better care and health outcomes for our patients.’ ■■Less than two thirds of trusts have a staff health and wellbeing plan in place, according to a report by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) published last week. The report sets out a ten-point action plan to boost staff health, which it says is ‘critical’ to patient care. Good staff health can lead to reduced MRSA infection rates and lower mortality rates. RCP clinical adviser on NHS workforce health Sian Williams said: ‘We owe it to those who work hard every day for our NHS to help them maintain and improve their health, and we owe it to our patients to provide a healthy engaged workforce.’ Nursing Standard’s Eat Well, Nurse Well campaign calls on employers to provide staff with healthy food options in the workplace.
