New president for Sheep Veterinary Society THE Sheep Veterinary Society has elected Jimmy Wilson (right) as its president for 2014/15. Mr Wilson took up the role at the society’s autumn conference in Darlington last month, succeeding Fiona Lovatt. Dr Lovatt became senior vice-president of the society, while Tim Bebbington was elected as the new junior vice-president. Mr Wilson qualified from Glasgow in 1973 and joined his father in practice on the Isle of Mull. With his father, he looked after the islands of Mull, Iona, Tiree and Coll. In 1980 he moved to Chorley in Lancashire and became a small animal vet. He returned to Scotland in 1984 as a general practitioner in Dunoon before rejoining his father on Mull in 1986. He eventually took over the practice in 1991 and retired from it in

July this year. He is still involved with the practice in an advisory capacity. ‘Sheep are farmed throughout the world and will live in marginal areas where

nothing else will survive. They populate the remote areas of the country and especially in the area where I live, the Highlands and Islands in the west of Scotland,’ said Mr Wilson. He also drew attention to the online webinars on sheep and their care that the Sheep Veterinary Society runs throughout the year, noting that these were welcomed by practitioners who live in remote areas and are unable to travel to towns and cities to participate in other meetings. Both Mr Wilson and his father have been and are still involved with the Highlands and Islands Veterinary Services Scheme, improving and sustaining it through consultation with, initially, the Scottish Office and now the Scottish Government and the BVA. doi: 10.1136/vr.g6079
