New ESPGHAN Editor: Some Thoughts on JPGN Hania Szajewska
D
o your remember the journal in which you published your first article? In my case it was the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition (JPGN). I still have the acceptance letter, by postal mail (hard to believe there were no e-mails!), and signed by Professor Michael Lentze, the serving editor. Twenty years later, I am greatly honored to have been appointed as the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition editor for the forthcoming term of 2014 through 2018. What is my vision? We are in the middle of a communication revolution. Centuries ago, it was paper and printing that revolutionized communication. Technology has since dramatically changed the way we communicate and exchange information. The Internet enables instant communication and instant access to information. E-mails have replaced traditional letters. Social media has reshaped our personal as well as professional lives. Information and communication technologies have even changed the way we practice medicine. Still, throughout these periods of dramatic change, many of our values remain constant; in particular, we continue to appreciate high quality! Thus, my vision for JPGN is to be the highest-quality journal in our field. How to achieve this goal? Together with Mel Heyman, the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition editor, and the new European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition associate editors, we will aim to solicit the best content, to create new content, and to present it innovatively. Among other changes, we plan to encourage more randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses, more educational materials, and more commentaries, including the ‘‘pros and cons’’ debates, which, I
believe, will increase the influence and usefulness of JPGN. Whatever changes are planned, we need the time to fully develop these changes, and we need you to be part of the changes as authors, as reviewers, and as our readers. We need your contributions. We need your opinions. We need to know your expectations and whether we are meeting them. Please communicate with us as information and communication technologies allow! Can there be a future without a past? Clearly, the answer is no. JPGN would not have had its present position and visibility without the hard work of our previous editors. I appreciate the hard work and contributions made by all of them. My special thanks and words of high esteem go to my predecessor, Professor David Branski. JPGN was fortunate to have had an editor who, despite his serious illness, served JPGN until his very last days. On a more personal note, it is thanks to David that I became familiar with the JPGN editorial processes. It was he who had invited me to join JPGN as one of the associate editors. This experience, I am sure, will prove useful while serving as the new European JPGN editor. JPGN was also very fortunate to have had Professor Raanan Shamir as acting editor. Following David’s death, he assumed the responsibilities, enabling a seamless transition. Many thanks go to Raanan and all members of the outgoing editorial board for all of their hard work. Having said all that, allow me to end with one last question. Which journal do you plan to submit your next research? On behalf of Mel Heyman and myself, we hope it is JPGN: the leading journal in the field of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition. Our journal.
