New chairman for greyhound charity STEVE Dean (pictured) has been appointed as the new chairman of the board of trustees of the Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT). He will succeed Andrew Higgins, who is stepping down after seven years in the role. Professor Dean was chief executive of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate from 2002 until 2011. From 2011 until earlier this year he was chairman of the Kennel Club. He will take up his appointment after the October meeting of the RGT board. ‘RGT is very fortunate to have someone of Steve Dean’s experience joining the board with his knowledge of the dog world, political skills and commitment to animal welfare,’ said Dr Higgins. ‘It is a challenging time for RGT and I am confident that the charity will grow from strength to strength under his leadership.’ Professor Dean said that he had worked for a time as a track veterinary surgeon, which had enhanced his enthusiasm for the racing greyhound. ‘I very much look forward to being a champion for this magnificent breed and, in particular, devoting time to improving upon the past success of the RGT in promoting the retired greyhound as a suitable companion.’ doi: 10.1136/vr.h4783
