My Journey in Cardiology – So far Mohd Khalilullah My journey through cardiology is spread over 50 years. I had joined Department of Cardiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, on 7th of February 1966 and the Life Time Achievement Award was conferred in February 2016 at the Annual CSI Conference held at Chennai. It is pertinent to say that I have not missed a single CSI conference since 1969 when I had presented the first paper of implantable pacemaker and also presented the first indigenous pacemaker in India. Several milestones stand very prominent. I was the first Honorary Editor of Indian Heart Journal from North India, which drastically changed the look and scientific contents of the IHJ. Having been trained under Prof. Sujoy B. Roy, I joined G.B. Pant Hospital in 1971 when only 3 cardiac cath studies used to be performed in a week and when I retired in 1995, the department was performing more than 25 cases per day. Clinical electrophysiology was started in March 1975, with advances in the field of cardiac pacing. The first catheter ablation was done by me in 1984 and arrhythmia surgery started in the same year probably first in Asia. Another important contribution was the establishment of Interventional Cardiology in 1985 with the first balloon procedure done on the 23rd of March 1985 the first on Indian soil, followed by 5 cases of BMV in RHD, MS, two using single balloon and three with double balloon technique with the assistance of Dr. James Lock and Prof. John Keane of Boston Children's Hospital. This was followed by balloon aortoplasty of COA, balloon dilation of valvular, subvalvular and supra valvular aortic stenosis. Renal artery stenosis and balloon aortoplasty of aorto arteritis were performed in 1986 followed by TV stenosis and several peripheral interventions including Nd/Yag laser assisted aortoplasty of total occluded aorta. PTCA and CABG were started in 1987. PDA closure was established in 1988 followed by ASD closure in 1991. Device closure of VSD following was attempted in 1991. I had privilege of setting up a strong teaching program of DM Cardiology at G.B. Pant Hospital, where several hundred students qualified such that some of leading Cardiologists, HOD and Directors of Institutions have been the product of the department. The first text book of Cardiology was edited and published in 2012. Having received Padma Shri in 1984, Padma Bhushan in 1990, Hon. Doctor of Science and Dr. B.C. Roy National Award, I feel greatly honoured and humbled to receive the Life Time

Achievement award by CSI. It is a journey with lots of challenges, achievements and sense of immense satisfaction over the last 5 decades. I salute the CSI and the fellow cardiologist of this country for the unique honor.
