Preface A symposium on 'Genetic Monitoring for Protection of Human Health and the Environment', organized for the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies by F.H. Sobels, F.N. Dulout and C. Matamoros, was held in San Jose, Costa Rica in March 1988. Scientific presentations were made by researchers from many countries in ~he Americas and Europe but the majority of presentations were by scientists from Latin America.' Following discussions of the work presented at that meeting, it was decided to prepare a special issue of Mutation Research that would highlight papers from Latin American scientists. Scientific manuscripts that are submitted to international journals from these countries are sometimes at a disadvantage in the review process because of the level of technology employed or the quality of the English. It is hoped that this special issue will not only serve to promote awareness of research on genetics and environmental mutagenesis in these countries but will also encourage submission of scientifically sound manuscripts to international, English language journals by researchers who may have been discouraged by

earlier experiences or who have never attempted to publish in such journals. Many scientists in Latin America are conducting research with small budgets and, in many cases, with minimal technical equipment and supplies. Further, frontier technologies are not usually available or are delayed in their transfer to Latin American countries. Despite these disadvantages, quality research is being conducted in these countries where creativeness and determination must often substitute for state-of-the-art methods and technology. It is also important to appreciate that, in many of these countries, regulation of human and environmental exposures is not as strict as in more industrialized nations and that this situation presents the need to study populations exposed to chemicals or environmental conditions not found elsewhere. We are pleased to present this series of papers that ranges from classical studies in Drosophila through mammalian somatic and germ-cell cytogenetics to molecular genetics.
