You may have noticed something new on the cover of this month’s Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons—the logo of our new publisher, Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams and Wilkins (WKH/LWW). The Academy made the important decision last year to partner with WKH/ LWW in publishing JAAOS to take advantage of the many positive benefits to be gained by our association with this respected worldwide medical and scientific publisher. The decision itself was the result of a lengthy investigative process. All of us understand that we are undergoing a paradigm shift in communications. This rapidly evolving 24/7 information highway is dramatically influencing how we stay abreast of changes that affect our practices as well as challenging how we engage in lifelong learning. Key to our partnership with WKH/ LWW was the assurance that the quality of JAAOS not be compromised. In fact, the high quality of JAAOS was critical to Lippincott’s seeking to partner with the Academy in publishing the Yellow Journal. Our new publisher champions JAAOS as the flagship publication of the orthopaedic titles it handles, encourages our strengths, and supports our independent emphasis on the highest achievable levels of excellence. The Academy still owns the Journal, and the Academy will hold the copyright to all content going forward. Certainly the acquisition of manuscripts and their selection for publication will remain the sole responsibility of the AAOS. The editorial preparation of manuscripts for publication remains at the AAOS offices and continues to be performed by Academy staff.

Our joining with WKH/LWW as our new publisher offers great advantages—first and foremost, that of taking the most widely read orthopaedic review journal in the world to even greater heights. WKH/LWW is committed to accelerating our growth and promoting awareness of the Journal globally. WKH/LWW journals (and those of their publishing partners) are read in more than 12,500 leading medical schools, hospitals, healthcare institutions, government entities, and corporations in 186 countries. JAAOS content will now be available in more places and in more formats than the Academy itself currently can achieve on its own. JAAOS will be joining other respected WKH/LWW journals on the publisher’s global medical information platform Ovid; these include the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association. Importantly, Ovid’s ability to sell to and support customers globally is unmatched—the New England Journal of Medicine recently selected Ovid as their exclusive distribution partner in China. WKH/LWW has a very strong international sales force, in fact—26 field offices and distributor partnerships—who speak 18 languages. WKH/LWW also shares the values of our orthopaedic community. Their mission is a commitment to provide current, accurate, expert information worldwide through leading-edge technology. Our new publisher participates in the National Library of Medicine’s Emergency Access Initiative as well as the Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) Program, an initiative of the World Health Organization,

working with major publishers to enable low- and middle-income countries to gain access to their large collection of biomedical and health literature. As in the past, JAAOS will continue to be accessible to those in need of this vital information who cannot afford it in developing countries. I welcome our partnership with WKH/LWW. publisher allows us to remain competitive and vibrant while accelerating our ability to provide you with the authoritative information you rely on. In fact, one immediate effect of this strategy is our new JAAOS app for iPad, which many of you were introduced to last month at the AAOS Annual Meeting in New Orleans. In his inaugural editorial in the very first issue of JAAOS published in

1993, Editor-in-Chief John Frymoyer, MD, emphasized that he and his new editorial board, “in the tradition of the Academy, will make every effort” to serve the Journal’s readership because JAAOS truly is “your journal.” We recommit ourselves to that promise now as we continue to serve you, our readership, through our new publisher.
