This issue of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Clinics of North America entitled, “Minimizing, Recognizing, and Managing Endoscopic Adverse Events,” is a comprehensive review of possible undesirable outcomes related to all types of endoscopic procedures. As the number of endoscopic procedures performed continues to increase, so does the potential for adverse events (AE). Previous articles and endoscopy courses may have addressed a specific type of AE related to one or two endoscopic procedures; however, this issue explores the full range of endoscopic AE. The following articles discuss not only AE themselves but also the keys to improving patient care through proper informed consent, adequate preparation for a procedure, prompt recognition when an AE has happened, and the use of devices to assist with endoscopic management when appropriate. The authors are all expert endoscopists from around the country, whose knowledge of this topic should be far ranging and who are experienced in use of the latest technology to aid in the management of AE. The text should serve as a valuable resource for anyone performing or assisting with endoscopic procedures, including gastroenterologists, fellows, nurses, and technicians. Being part of an endoscopy team means being prepared for the unexpected. This issue will help achieve that goal. Uzma D.
