Mike Slater is a practising occupational hygienist who has played an active part in the profession since 1989 when he joined the BOHS North West Regional organizing committee and became involved as an examiner for occupational hygiene oral examinations. He has been a member of BOHS Council since 2007 and before that served on two predecessor organizations, the British Examining Board in Occupational Hygiene (BEBOH) and the Council of the British Institute of Occupational Hygienists (BIOH) when it was first formed following the merger of BEBOH and the Institute of Occupational Hygienists (IOH).

After studying Chemistry at the University of Liverpool he joined the Pilkington Brothers Occupational Hygiene Department in 1978. He worked as part of a team led by three experienced occupational hygienists who encouraged and helped him to develop as a professional and supported him while working towards obtaining his Diploma of Professional Competence in Occupational Hygiene from BOHS, the highest professional occupational hygiene qualification awarded in the UK. In 1989 he became part of an outstanding team at the National Occupational Hygiene Service in Manchester. He went on to join Diamond Environmental Ltd as Technical Director in 1993 and is currently Joint Managing Director. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Environmental Decision Making from the Open University in 2001. Mike works with a wide range of industrial clients providing advice and assistance to help them manage health risks in the workplace. Particular interests include risk assessment, design and management of control measures and, as a consequence of having started his career working in the glass industry, the thermal environment. He has been heavily involved in the education and training of occupational hygienists for over 20  years through the BOHS/OHTA module courses run in the UK and internationally by Diamond Environmental and on the MSc course at Manchester University, where he is an Honorary Lecturer in Occupational Hygiene. He also taught on undergraduate courses as an Associate Lecturer for the Open University between 2002 and 2010.
