Message from the Editor-in-Chief Yoshinao Wada Osaka Medical Center and Research Institute for Maternal and Child Health, Osaka, Japan

It is our pleasure to launch a new open-access journal, Mass Spectrometry (http://www.t3.jstage.jst.go.jp/browse/mass spectrometry/-char/ja), published by the Mass Spectrometry Society of Japan. In the last decade, a number of scientific journals have been started by publishers and scientific organizations, and most are in the open-access format. This phenomenon stems from the emergence of the World Wide Web, which revolutionized the way that new findings, insights and innovations in science and technologies are disseminated to readers who formerly relied on paper journal issues. Downloading a digital copy is the new mode of obtaining information. This revolution has enabled more rapid delivery of new discoveries and knowledge from researchers to the community. Furthermore, the open-access style facilitates wider distribution. From another perspective, the open-access style resolves the problem of restricted access to results which were generated from publicly-funded research. In this respect, filing papers in journals rather than posting them on the author’s own or institutional web sites is highly advantageous, because journals, as community-based publishing vehicles, have their own evaluation and selection responsibilities carried out by the editorial board as well as their own publication policies. This is the case with Mass Spectrometry, which will be a trustworthy platform aiming to never disappoint readers who pursue novel discoveries and truth in the field of mass spectrometry. To achieve this brilliant kick-off, Dr. Yamagaki has taken on the responsibility of being guest editor and called for papers on the topic of MALDI. I am happy to announce that we have excellent articles for the opening issue of Mass Spectrometry.
