MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

Message From the Chairperson Judy Kirk, MS, RD, CSR, CDN, FNKF

A

S I WRITE this Chair message today, I am preparing for our annual Spring Clinical Meeting 2015 in Dallas, Texas. Many exciting topics are on this year’s agenda. In the month of February 2015, a National Kidney Foundation Council on Renal Nutrition (NKF/CRN) Renal Dietitian Practice Survey was sent to all Council on Renal Nutrition members and also posted on the Renal RD listserv. I hope you had an opportunity to complete the survey. We gathered information on the demographics of nephrology (renal) dietitians throughout the country, areas of clinical practice, how NKF resources (Web site, Clinical Meeting, RenaLink, Pocket Guide to Nutrition Assessment of the Patient with Chronic Kidney Disease, and local CRN councils) are used by nephrology dietitians. Benefits and needs of the NKF/CRN membership will be a primary agenda topic at this year’s meeting. Much discussion and analysis is planned at the Spring Clinical Meeting 2015, the outcome of which will be in a future Chair message. At the Clinical Meeting 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada, we discussed a potential evidence analysis project. KDOQI had agreed to partner with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to create a workgroup to update the nutritional guidelines published in 2000. The KDOQI and Academy Evidence Analysis Project members have been selected and the process has begun. Further updates to follow as they become available. In addition to this, a National Renal Diet Project has begun to revise the National Renal Diet materials. This project is a joint effort of the Renal Practice Group and CRN. This workgroup will be incorporating the up-to-date changes from the KDOQI and Academy Evidence Analysis Project. As I am a member of this group, I will provide updates in future Chair messages. A National Kidney Foundation resource revision that will soon be completed and updated on the Web site is Nutrition and Early Kidney Disease (stages 1-4). The NKF/CRN Executive Committee is finalizing this review. The NKF/CRN is also in the process of updating the list of cookbooks for renal and renal diabetic clients. This revised

list will include only cookbooks that meet currently accepted NKF guidelines for chronic kidney disease. A highlight of the clinical meeting is our awards. The awards for 2015 are as follows: Regional Recognized Renal Dietitians were Sharon Stall (region 1), Anna Marie Rodriquez (region III), and Leah Beaird (region IV). The Susan Knapp award was presented to Janelle Gonyea. The Outstanding Service Award was presented to Denise Dilley. The Joel D. Kopple Award was presented to Dr. Maria Chan who spoke on ‘‘Researching the Practice Framework to improve the Nutritional Care of Patients with End Stage Kidney Disease.’’ I encourage all to visit the NKF Web site and review the criteria for our awards. If you need additional information on the award process, please contact your regional representative/alternate representative for further information. We all know a colleague that is deserving of recognition. It would give me great pleasure to see your name on the list next year. Are you familiar with who is your region representative or alternate to the NKF/CRN Executive Committee? If not, I invite you to visit the NKF Web site and see who your representatives are this year. We are always looking for your input regarding needs and concerns to address for the nephrology dietitian. You can communicate through a local CRN council to a regional representative or alternative representative. If you are or not a member of a local CRN council, you can also contact a regional or alternate representative directly. We meet annually at the clinical meeting but meet via conference calls throughout the year. Your input is welcome at any time. This is your professional organization, how can we meet your needs? Maybe you want to become involved in the NKF/CRN Executive Committee. Watch the NKF Web site in August for adding your name as a candidate for open positions on the Executive Committee. The positions for 2015 are region 1, 3, and 5 region representatives. In 2016, we will be looking for region 2 and region 4 representatives. There is some time commitment that is true, but the rewards personally and professionally are amazing.
