Foreword Medical and Surgical Management of the Diabetic Foot and Ankle

This edition of Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery is focused on the medical and surgical management of the diabetic foot and ankle. The incidence of diabetic foot pathology and its related devastating complications from neuropathic foot ulceration to Charcot neuroarthropathy has exponentially increased in the United States and around the world. A variety of complications including critical limb ischemia, diabetic foot infections, osteomyelitis, Charcot neuroarthropathy, and amputations are well covered by the experienced invited authors and guest editor Dr Peter Blume. Additional topics include plastic reconstruction and off-loading techniques for the diabetic foot as well as the use of bioengineered alternative tissues for soft tissue coverage of the diabetic foot. The importance of a multidisciplinary team model in any academic or private practice is also well emphasized throughout this issue. This concept has been well proven in many scientific studies for the overall medical and surgical management of the patient with diabetes mellitus.
