Maternal Stress and Depressive Symptoms In the Summer of 1987 we collected data on a random sample of mothers (n = 87) living in Michigan State University's student housing for families. About 90 percent of the mothers had more than a high school education. Using instruments similar to those employed by Dr. Suzanne Orr and her colleagues,' including the center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale,2 we also found a strong association between higher levels of reported stressors and depressive symptoms

(Table 1). Stressors were accessed using the Hassles Scale.3 There was no maternal depression in families with annual income >$20,000 (n = 9). Nineteen percent (15/78) of mothers from families with annual income
