1883-1966 On September 6, 1966, Margaret Sanger, the American founder and international leader of the birth-control movement, died nearing her 83rd year. Her great achievement in the field of population control is known everywhere in the world. What our readers may not know is that she took great personal interest in our Society and, particularly, in the establishment of this Journal. Following are some of her thoughts as expressed in various letters that I received from her. Over ten years ago, when the Society and its Journal were still in the planning stage, Margaret Sanger wrote: ... "I congratulate you on your proposed project to publish an American journal dealing with sex problems and it is encouraging that your project is under way. You are most kind to do me the honor of inviting me to be a member of your advisory board.... My earliest training, in fact, interest, was in sex psychology and my friendship through the years, with Havelock Ellis, certainly enlarged my horizon in this field. I still feel, however, that the International Planned Parenthood movement will take my entire time.... This means that I regret that I shall not be able to accept your kind invitation but I certainly shall be interested and I will always be glad to look over any article on a subject of interest to me or on which you think my criticism might be helpful. .. " A few years later, in 1960, she returned to the same subject: "It is good news to all of us that you recognize the lack of sexual research in this country, and that you are going to publish a journal on sexual research. It seems to me that your vision should be supported financially and morally by educators and foundations. The Birth Control movement in its earliest days felt the need of sex education and almost all the clinics throughout the country had to set up a department for the simplest kind of sex information. But we never went in for research, and I wish you the greatest success in your endeavor." 155

After many years of bitter fights and great personal sacrifices, Margaret Sanger lived to see world-wide acceptance of her views. After her death, numerous articles honoring her and her pioneer work appeared. The essence of what she was and what she did for humanity was perhaps contained in an editorial, published by the New York Times on September I 1, 1966: ... "She was one of history's great rebels and a monumental figure of the first half of the twentieth century.... The birth-control movement grew out of one woman's outrage at the suffering she saw among the poor. It grew into a view of family planning accepted and practiced in a majority of American homes, a cause widely and wisely promoted throughout the world and an international consensus that population control is necessary to human welfare and global peace."

In paying tribute to Margaret Sanger, this writer wants to acknowledge his deep gratitude for the inspiration he received from her as a young physician and for the friendship she bestowed upon him throughout many years. -HANS LEHFELOT
