In Memoriam

Lucien Maurice Levy, MD, PhD 1946–2013

Dr Lucien Levy passed away December 19, 2013, at his home in Columbia, Md. Though a very unassuming and private person, news spread within hours from the entire George Washington University campus (Washington, DC), to alumni, the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), and beyond. Dr Levy was born in Casablanca, Morocco on May 4, 1946. He completed undergraduate studies at McGill University (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) in 1967, earning an electrical engineering degree. In 1973, he earned a PhD degree in biomedical and electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, Mass) under Dr William Daggett in the cardiovascular unit. In 1981, he received his MD

degree at Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, Md). He completed his neuroimaging fellowship under Dr Giovanni DiChiro at the National Institutes of Health, collaborating on the imaging of smell at the Taste and Smell Clinic at Washington, DC, with Dr Henkins, which unknowingly set the stage for later research in functional MR imaging of the olfactory system. His academic career continued in Washington, DC, as an attending radiologist at Georgetown University for 5 years and thereafter as professor of radiology at the George Washington University since 1999. Dr Levy enjoyed his work with the RSNA, serving as Associate Editor of Radiology since 2009. His final publications “MR Imaging of Papilledema and Visual Pathways: Effects of Increased Intracranial pressure and Pathophysiologic Mechanisms” and “Pseudotumor Cerebri: Brief Review of Clinical Syndrome and Imaging Findings” appeared in the AJNR American Journal of Neuroradiology, where he served as Senior Editor since 2007. Dr Mauricio Castillo, editor-in-chief of AJNR described Lucien as “a conscientious, acute, and fair editor, taking pride in his work and always offered new ideas. His breath of knowledge was spectacular and as AJNR’s Editor Emeritus Dr Robert Quencer once said: one could learn more from reading Lucien’s evaluations then from the actual articles he was reviewing.” At the 2013 Annual Meeting of the AJNR, Dr Levy’s lifelong commitment to neuroradiology was honored with the establishment of the Lucien Levy Best Research Article Award, which is awarded for the best original research article that is

selected among all original research articles submitted to AJNR. Those who worked with Lucien in the reading room saw his love for teaching; his wit and ability to engender smiles with even the most mundane topics will be missed immensely by his professional colleagues, his trainees, and all who came in contact with him. Neuroradiology fellows traveled to The George Washington University from as far as India, Iraq, and Israel seeking his mentorship. I will always be grateful to him for inviting me to join him as a member of the George Washington family. Lucien continued to teach residents, fellows, and medical students during his brave fight with colon cancer. During the last months at George Washington University, the radiology residents honored him with the Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence, an award that he treasured. A few days before his passing, he was happy to hear the good news that all of his senior residents had passed the American Board of Radiology resident examination. Few of us knew Lucien’s personal passion of swimming, tennis, folk dancing, jokes, and stories. He enjoyed sharing with his family his passion for Moroccan and Tunisian cuisine. Though he will be immensely missed by radiology colleagues everywhere, his family knows all too well that his life will always be celebrated among his two children and his close friend, confidant, and former wife, Dr Shirley Yang. He is survived by his former wife, Shirley; and his two children, Michael and Vivian. —Raymond K. Tu, MD, MS, Roger Bhojwani, MD, Reza Taheri, MD, PhD, Mark L. Monteferrante, MD, and Asif Ahmed, MD
