LOW-BIRTH-WEIGHT INFANTS: NEUROLOGICAL SEQUELAE P. A. Davies&A.L. Stewart As previous surveys had established that the incidence of neurological abnormalities and intellectual retardation increased directly with decreasing birth-weight and gestational age, most recent work has concentrated on infants of very LBW. The results have been analysed and correlated with newer aspects of care as well as with perinatal events, and will be discussed in this context. A complete review of the older literature for comparison is not possible here, but has been largely covered in a handful of major surveys to which frequent reference will be made (Drillien, 1964, 1967; McDonald, 1967). In the following text the term "low birthweight " (LBW) will mean a birth-weight of =S 25OOg, and "very low birth-weight"
