Dankook University Summary.-Korean and American university students were compared on the Differential Loneliness Scale. The 70 Koreans scored as more lonely than the 213 Americans, while all were living away from home. A common social phenomenon, loneliness is experienced by people some time in their lives (5). The chronically lonely are considered ineffective and apprehensive communicators (I), who tend to emit signals implying they are not interested in talking with others (7). The isolation adds to their communicative problems because they have little chance to practice (8). Loneliness ensues. This study assessed whether Koreans, perceived as talkative and dominant in oral encounters (4), are lonely. Using the Differential Loneliness Scale (6), 70 Koreans (44 men, 26 women) from Dankook University and 213 Americans (104 men, 109 women) from West Virginia University, of similar age and year in school, took part. The scale identifies felt dissatisfaction with romantic/sexual, friendship, f a d y , and community relationships.
