s the 2015 General Election draws closer, the spotlight is on the NHS and promises politicians are making in relation to it. Health care has been high on all of the main partys’ agendas and I am sure you have all been listening/reading/ watching closely. But how often do you personally get a chance to ask politicians what their intentions are, how they intend to implement them or how they explain recent changes? The London Nurse Show, a brand new event organised by British Journal of Nursing (BJN) gives you the opportunity to do just that. Andy Burnham MP (Shadow Secretary of State for Health, Labour Party), Dr Dan Poulter MP (Under Secretary of State for Health, Conservative Party) and Jillian Creasy (Green Party Health Spokesperson) have been confirmed to address delegates at the London Nurse Show. They have also all agreed to a Q&A session following their presentations. This is your opportunity, as health professionals working on the coalface, to ask who, why, when, where, what, and how. The NHS is the biggest employer in the UK.This makes your vote in the election absolutely key to the outcome and, regardless of whether you’ve already decided on how you’ll vote (if at all), the opportunity to hear them explain their policies around the NHS is one not to be missed. I am fascinated to hear what the politicians will have to say at the London Nurse Show, and excited to hear your questions (and their answers!). Although the election is dominating the headlines, I’m sure you will have seen on the news, read on Twitter, or even been involved yourself in the #hellomynameis campaign that went viral earlier this month. The social media campaign (Granger, 2015) was launched by Dr Kate Granger, a consultant who has terminal cancer. Following her own experience as a patient, she was struck by the lack of introductions made by health professionals responsible for her care. This negatively affected her experience in hospital and motivated her, as a health professional, to do something about it. And so she came up with the hashtag #hellomynameis and got everybody talking on Twitter. Nurses across the UK have pledged to ensure they always introduce themselves to patients before delivering their care. We are delighted to welcome Dr Granger as our keynote speaker on Day 1 of the London Nurse Show, where she will be speaking about her hugely successful campaign and the story behind it.You can read more about #hellomynameis on the website: www.hellomynameis.org.uk. In addition to the political presentations and keynotes, the CPD-accredited London Nurse Show will offer interactive workshops on subjects such as intravenous therapy, stoma care and pressure care. The

idea behind the workshops is that nurses will have the chance to learn about a specific condition, treatment and/or product and then try this out themselves, with the supervision of a specialist nurse. The content is aimed at nurses working across all disciplines, and will give nurses the opportunity to share best practice with their peers. Each workshop will be repeated four times across the two days and is limited to 40 delegates per session. This will ensure that participants can be truly involved in the workshop, ask questions and interact with their fellow nurses. If you are interested in a particular workshop, make sure you sign up as soon as the information is sent to you (it will be emailed to all registered delegates in the coming weeks). Cecilia Anim, President of the Royal College of Nursing, will deliver a session on inequalities of health and wellbeing in London on Day 2, and the keynote will be delivered by Ian Peate, BJN Editor in Chief, on patient safety. These presentations are not to be missed, delivered by two key opinion leaders in nursing who have a wealth of experience and expertise under their belts. On Day 2 there will be an afternoon of sessions dedicated to students (workshops for registered nurses will also be running). These will cover preceptorship, job applications and writing for publication. Again, they are delivered by experts in their field and will provide student nurses with the necessary tools, and confidence, to ensure their professional development has a strong start. The programme for the London Nurse Show is still under construction and more great names and topics will be announced in the coming weeks, so make sure you follow @LondonNurseShow on Twitter for all the latest news. The event is completely free for nurses, but spaces are limited so make sure you register now to avoid disappointment: BJN www.londonnurseshow.com.
