Letter From the Guest Editors

I

t has been a great pleasure being the guest editors for this current edition of Seminars in Roentgenology focused on “Update in Emergency Radiology.” We share this edition with our radiologic colleagues whom we consider experts in the field of emergency radiology. There are a myriad of interesting topics in emergency radiology that we could have chosen; however, we focused on articles that concentrated on key issues faced daily by trainees, emergency radiologists, and general radiologists alike. There are 7 articles dedicated to imaging the acutely ill patient presenting to the emergency room. As trauma is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of death in persons younger than 40 years, there are 2 articles solely dedicated to thoracic and abdominal trauma. Imaging features on radiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging of the trauma patient are discussed. Nontraumatic thoracoabdominal aortic emergencies deserve their own article as their imaging presentations for potential surgical or endovascular therapies are relied on heavily for these potential catastrophic disasters. Vascular emergencies are becoming more problematic to image, given the associated renal insufficiency that coexists in many of these

patients; thus there is an article dedicated to imaging vascular emergencies on magnetic resonance imaging. An article on musculoskeletal emergencies is presented, which focuses on osseous as well as infectious entities. There are many potential abdominal emergencies that could have been discussed, but as appendicitis is the most common surgical emergency in the United States, we decided to dedicate a article on colonic and appendiceal emergencies. Finally, a nice overview on emergent nuclear medicine indications is discussed. We are very grateful to all the contributing authors who all provided excellent content and beautiful images. We learned a tremendous amount of practical information by reading their articles, and we are confident that the readers will have the same experience. We would like to thank Dr Jannette Collins for giving us the opportunity to oversee this exciting edition.
