LETTER FROM THE EDITORS YALE JOURNAL OF BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE 88 (2015), pp.1.

Nearly a century ago in 1928, Dr. Milton C. Winternitz established the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine (YJBM) with the primary goal of furthering the educational and professional advancements of students within Yale School of Medicine. In contrast to the conventional curriculum of the time, Dr. Winternitz was a dedicated proponent of integrating the practice of writing as a means of improvement in one’s graduate studies. In the beginning, YJBM served to publish Yale medical student thesis abstracts covering a broad range of the medical sciences. Since 1928, YJBM has experienced significant transformations in its editorial leadership, journal design, author contributions, and international recognition while still holding true to the original intent of the journal: disseminating quality research in the medical sciences while providing a unique educational opportunity for medical and graduate school students. YJBM has undergone many notable changes and momentous transitions throughout its history. One of the more recent changes occurred in June 2011, when each issue began including a core group of focus topic-related manuscripts published alongside standard, broad-based manuscripts. In 2015, YJBM will debut two exciting transitions in design and content. We are revealing our first major change with the publication of this issue: a new design for the cover and interior of the journal. First, the cover has taken on a more modern style with a full cover image and a bold overlay of both the journal title and focus topic. Second, the layout of the articles has been updated to complement the contemporary exterior. In addition to incorporating the YJBM logo on the first page of each paper, we have re-fashioned the formatting of each manuscript for a fresher and more modern appearance. Our second change will debut in our June 2015 issue on Cancer. Each redesigned issue will contain only manuscripts related to the focus topic. We feel that this will further increase the focus, organization, and quality of each issue. Throughout this important time of transition, YJBM continues to be a distinct educational tool for the graduate and medical school students on the editorial board. Thanks to our dedicated readership, institutional support, and student initiative, YJBM continues to be the only internationally recognized, peer-reviewed, and PubMed-indexed medical journal edited and published by students. We hope you enjoy the new layout and format of the journal, and we hope that you, our readership, are as excited about these changes as the Editorial Board is. We look forward to the debut of our first full focus topic issue in June 2015 and hope that you do, too. Danielle Gerhard and Nicholas Vincent Co-Editors-in-Chief, 2014-2016
