Let’s take a fresh look at learning This month we feature news on the latest proposals to make nursing education fit for purpose (page 7). Health Education England (HEE) published Raising the Bar, the final report from the Shape of Caring review, which was led by Lord Willis. One of its main messages for senior nurses is that a year of post-graduation preceptorship should be an established part of nursing education. The year would be part of what is described as a ‘2+1+1’ model, which also includes a year of ‘acute specialism’.

Acting assistant editor Jennifer Sprinks Tel: +44 (0)20 8872 3186 Email: [email protected] Senior production editor Julie Hickey Tel: +44 (0)20 8872 3148 Email: [email protected]

Lord Willis says: ‘I want employers to invest in that specialist stream together with the universities and then to carry it on into preceptorship so there is a greater joined-up support for people on their journey into nursing.’

He describes current preceptorship arrangements as ‘very much haphazard’, depending on where people work. If the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the review’s ‘co-sponsor’, gives the proposals the go ahead, there will therefore be big changes in resourcing in terms of nursing numbers and schedules.

NURSING MANAGEMENT

The Nursing and Midwifery Council’s input will ensure the effects of the Shape of Caring review will be felt across the UK

Nick Lipley Editor

That said, Lord Willis argues if it’s good enough for doctors, it’s good enough for nurses too: ‘When medics get their degree and they start their first year, it is very much as a training post. I want to see that same model for nursing.’ The Shape of Caring review was commissioned by an England-focused organisation but its effects surely will be felt across the UK, if for no other reason than the NMC is a UK-wide body and changes to how nurses are educated in one of the countries is likely to affect staff everywhere. Lord Willis notes: ‘This is the first time we’ve seen HEE and the regulator working together to formulate futureproofed solutions. We must seize that moment. The NMC has been hugely supportive in terms of saying, “You tell it like it is and we will promise to look at it.” I don’t think you can ask for more.’ What do you think? Could we?
