Keynote Speakers Professor Sir David Lane Scientific Director, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research; and Chief Scientist, A*STAR and Director p53 Laboratory, Singapore Professor Sir David Lane is the Scientific Director, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and the Chief Scientist of Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and Director of the p53 Laboratory. Professor Lane is one of the scientists credited with the landmark discovery of p53 gene in 1979. Known as the “Guardian of the genome”, p53 is considered the most significant of all the genes altered in cancer cells because mutations of the gene cause almost 50% of all human cancers. In recognition of Professor Lane’s outstanding contributions and achievements in cancer research, he was awarded the prestigious Royal Society’s Buchanan Medal in 2004 and the Cancer Research UK’s “2012 Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research Prize”.

Professor Eva Grunfeld Vice-Chair Research, University of Toronto, Canada Professor Eva Grunfeld is a physician scientist at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, Health Services Research Program and Director of the Knowledge Translation Research Network. She is also the Giblon Professor and Vice Chair, Research, Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto. Professor Grunfeld is a leader in cancer health services and outcomes research. Her research focuses on evaluation and knowledge translation of cancer health services, covering the entire spectrum of cancer control activities. She uses a mixed-methods approach including randomized controlled trials, qualitative research and outcomes research. Professor Grunfeld holds many peer-review grants as Principal Investigator and has served on many committees to further the goals of cancer control in Canada and internationally.

Professor Dennis Lo Director, Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Professor Dennis Lo is Director of Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences and the Li Ka Shing Professor of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Professor Lo discovered the presence of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma and pioneered a number of innovations for the detection of tumour-derived DNA in the plasma of cancer patients. In recognition of his work, Professor Lo has received numerous awards and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society (UK) and a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.

Professor Fiona Watt Director, Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, King’s College London, UK Professor Fiona Watt is Director of the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine, King’s College London. From 2006 to 2012 she was Deputy Director of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute and Deputy Director of the Wellcome Trust Centre for Stem Cell Research, University of Cambridge. Her internationally recognised research into epidermal stem cells and tumour formation will be of great interest to researchers attending SCC214. Her current projects are concerned with self-renewal and lineage selection by human and mouse epidermal stem cells, in addition to the role of stem cells in tumour formation. Professor Watt is particularly interested in the interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic factors in the regulation of cell fate decisions.
