A way to the only one by the interchangeable integration of animal models for human diseases and a tissue culture system ○ Shinya Watanabe Translational Research Center, Fukushima Medical University

The Fukushima Translational Research Project is eventually aims to forge a novel industry in Fukushima. The creation of a new industry that we aim for lies in a combined field of the manufacturing industry and service industry utilizing new biomaterials. The first problem to overcome is that available tissues derived from patients are extremely small in quantity. We planned to process the original human tissues and increase the quantities to overcome the disadvantage, to convert them into comprehensively analyzed data, and to develop analytical techniques from trace amounts of samples. We chose two methodologies of animal model development and tissue culture as a method to increase the amount of biomaterials. As an animal model of human diseases, we have succeeded in establishing two types of lineages; one is a so-called tumor-bearing mouse model having a human cancer tissue subcutaneously transplanted and

the other is a human leukemia mouse model generated by injecting human hematopoietic malignant tumor cells from the tail vein and can subsequently exhibit disease-progress similar to human leukemia. On the other hand, we have developed our own culture method, which enables us to proliferate cell clusters derived from human cancer tissue at a very slow speed over a long period. Further, we challenged whether these established in vivo proliferating cells in animal body could be transferred to the in vitro culture system, or conversely, whether the cultured cell clusters could be transferred to the animal system. These interchangeable integration has been successfully conducted in several lineages. These success suggests that our products can be commercialized by being widely used as a novel biomaterial that has never been seen in research and development of anticancer drugs.
