Editorial It was a pleasure to read the recent editorial, by Prof. Ronald J. Roberts, describing the beginnings, 40 years ago, of the Journal of Fish Diseases. The fish health community has benefited tremendously by Ron’s vision, recognized as a leading venue for the highest quality research works from around the world, the Journal covers disease topics in all aquatic species, and embraces all research disciplines. Flipping through successive issues as the years have trailed by, one can often find original case reports announcing the detection and description of a new fish disease or syndrome, and then – as more issues are thumbed through – the chronological unfolding of the mystery as various modalities of fish health research have unwrapped layers; from this, the discovery of treatment and control strategies alongside of broadly applicable hypotheses, theories, discovery roadmaps, new techniques and research models. Taken together, tangible evidence of the value of papers published herein. Key connections between basic and applied research are obvious within each issue – and over its lifetime, these successful connective scripts have made the Journal of Fish Diseases a preferred ‘home’ to many of us contributing to finfish and shellfish disease advances, and the Journal – with its international editorial board – has always been far more than a house journal for a particular academic institution. Thinking back – not quite forty years – but 26 years, when I submitted the first papers from my academic thesis to the Journal, I was pleasurably

surprised (in fact knocked off my chair) by receiving a short note from Ron personally acknowledging the work that I had done, thanking me for submitting the work to the Journal, and hoping that I would find the reviewer comments and criticisms to be constructive – which they were. Equally unexpected, a similar note from Dr. Rodney Wootten, joint editor, on a subsequent paper. A perfect way to feel welcomed into the world of research. Treasured moments to draw upon as a guiding principle. A reminder is also that reviewers donate their time and wisdom to engage authors in a constructive goal, the impact of which can extend far past the paper currently under discussion. A journal thrives when supported by researchers sending along their finest works, reviewers, subject editors, and editors donating their time (a vanishing resource!) and production professionals within the publishing house providing timely client communications and expert services to authors. Such has been the recipe of success for the Journal and I look forward to working with a team of authors (new and seasoned), reviewers, and editorial and production specialists within the publishing house of John Wiley to ensure that the Journal continues its remarkable journey.
