In Memoriam

Jay J. Listinsky, MD, PhD  1951–2012

Dr Jay J. Listinsky passed away on September 9, 2012, after a long and courageous fight with leukemia. Dr Listinsky was born on November 9, 1951, in Milwaukee, Wis. He received his MD degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine (Chicago, Ill) in 1982. He completed his residency in radiology at the University of Louisville Hospitals (Louisville, Ky) and fellowship at Uni-

versity of Rochester/Strong Memorial Hospital (Rochester, NY). Throughout his career, which included the University of Alabama Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala, the Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, Ohio), and Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Jay constantly displayed a joy in teaching at all levels, as well as a gifted and innovative approach both to imaging and later in the area of molecular mechanics. In breast imaging, for instance, he was one of the first colleagues that managed to generate three-dimensional MR breast images using his own programs. Even through his last days with us, he maintained a constant, insatiable, and inquisitive approach to both imaging and molecular mechanics as they related to targeted effective patient care based on solid science. He displayed a passion both for teaching and for science and the critical need to answer the most fundamental of all questions, “why?” It was this probing inquisitiveness that consumed him in the last quarter of his life. For instance, he was both enthralled and mystified by the knowledge that fucosylated molecules appeared to have multiple overlapping physiologic properties, which potentially had diagnostic application in radiology. The reasons for the seemingly innocuous sugar to have these abilities, however, were largely unknown. Not having access to a basic science laboratory that could test

any facts emerging from the hypotheses that he posed, he sought out the laboratory of Dr Gene Siegal and generated within him a desire to enter into a scientific partnership with both him and his wife, Cathy, that spanned nearly 2 decades. Together they entered the world of glycobiology and produced six manuscripts, the first a general review article in 1998, and the last, just a few months ago was published in Anticancer Drug. His talents, meticulousness, and energy were also utilized by Radiology, both as a book and as a manuscript reviewer. His students, residents, fellows, and colleagues relate a constant stream of stories of an always deeply humble, quiet, yet always smiling and happy teacher, singularly gifted with infectious enthusiasm, but who sincerely felt that teaching and learning were both best done with an ever-present box of fresh doughnuts in the room. He was deeply devoted to his wife, Dr Catherine Listinsky, and was a loving, doting father for his two daughters, Elizabeth and Jennifer. I personally have lost a true friend of more than 20 years, a friend who constantly taught me the true meaning of courage. Jay Listinsky will be sorely missed by all of us. He is survived by his wife, Cathy; two daughters, Elizabeth and Jennifer; a brother, Tom; and a sister Jean. —Peter J. Dempsey, MD
