JALA: Advancing Translational Laboratory Science and Technology for 20 Years!

By JALA Editor-in-Chief, Edward Kai-Hua Chow, PhD1 It is with humility, pride, and excitement that I begin my tenure as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Laboratory Automation (JALA) just as it begins its 20th year of publishing. JALA is well known throughout the scientific community as the publish and learn about new technologies that are transforming bioengineering, chemistry, robotics, materials science, nanotechnology, mechanical engineering, and so many other multidisciplinary areas of laboratory research. The strength of JALA’s past growth and future potential lies in the power of diversity and collaboration. No other journal reflects these dynamics (and their results) more genuinely than JALA. Thousands of life sciences R&D professionals from many different disciplines have contributed to the breadth and depth of expertise that will result in more than 7500 published pages by the end of this calendar year. To date, JALA’s unique and rigorously peer-reviewed breakthroughs have been cited an estimated 2164 times by other scientific journals and publications. As JALA’s new editor-in-chief, I am personally grateful to those who served before me to build the journal that is JALA. On behalf of the entire laboratory science and technology community, I extend sincere thanks and praise to former editors-in-chief Robin Felder, Mark Russo, Doug Gurevitch, and especially Dean Ho, from whom I learned so much, and to the thousands of expert authors, editors, reviewers, editorial board members, and scientific advisers. Thanks, too, to those who read JALA so faithfully. While SLAS members have always ranked JALA as a top benefit of membership, JALA’s reach and impact extend well beyond the Society’s borders. In 2013, JALA was accessed online 458,050 times by viewers in 132 different countries around the world, and 159.533 full-text articles were downloaded. In the meantime, author feedback reflects extremely high satisfaction—88% of JALA authors say JALA was their first choice for publication, and 100% say they would publish in JALA again, citing its unique editorial focus,

international reach, impact factor, and the reputation of JALA’s editors and editorial board. As technology continues to advance at an incredible rate, particularly in the area of laboratory automation, JALA will continue to offer a front-row view of the action. With your authorship, reviewership, and/or readership, JALA will showcase the important achievements emerging from the unique intersection of academic, industry, and government research innovation. We thank you in advance for sharing this journey with us and proving that the power of diversity and collaboration is alive and well.
