It is all in a name . and the name brings us new opportunities As most of us are probably aware, over the past 14 years the John A Hartford Foundation, augmented with monies from The Atlantic Philanthropies and The Mayday Fund, supported the development of the Building Academic Geriatric Nursing Capacity initiative and nine Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. The program supported over 200 predoctoral and postdoctoral nursing scholars from these Centers as well as other wonderful institutions across the country. A few years ago, due to changes in strategic priorities and focus, the Foundation and Centers of Geriatric Nursing Excellence transitioned to a centralized process in which their collaborative work was merged together and they became the National Hartford Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence (NHCGNE). In addition, the NHCGNE is a planned unit of the Gerontological Society of America. The nine funded centers were the original members of this group. Slowly, over the past year, other Universities and Organizations with expertise and interest in gerontological nursing have applied and been invited to join. This growth provided many ways in which the gerontological nursing community could grow and develop with regard to leadership, scholarship and clinical expertise. It gets more exciting, however! In August of 2014 at the Board meeting of the NHCGNE a decision was made to change the name to the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence (NHCGNE). One little letter to me says a heck of a lot! We now really have the opportunity, thanks to the insight of the John A Hartford Foundation, to bring together ALL of the work being done across the country in gerontological nursing. We can merge our collective expertise across practice, research and teaching. What an opportunity and think of what we can do together rather than divided. Some of you may be chuckling . one letter . what is the big deal! On the surface it may appear to be a small difference, but it reflects the large variability across all current member institutions and future members of the NHCGNE (please see http://www. geriatricnursing.org for more details regarding the members). Each of the members is part of the greater whole represented by

membership in the NHCGNE. The important and coalescing identity of the National Hartford Center membership is the uncompromising commitment to gerontological nursing excellence and quality health care for all older adults. The next questions you are probably asking are . so what would be in it for me as an individual or for my University if we were to join? And what does it take to join? Membership in the NHCGNE will help your school or organization to strengthen the gerontological nursing programs and expertise within your organizations. NHCGNE membership offers you access to entrepreneurs in the field, selected research opportunities, two free registrations at the established annual faculty development Academic Leadership Conference and cutting-edge webinars and online resources developed by NHCNGE experts. Through resources, international and interprofessional collegial relationships and mentoring, you and your leadership will receive support in developing gerontological nursing faculty capacity, executive academic leadership and your gerontological nursing program(s). In addition you will have the opportunity to disseminate the work produced at your own institutions and build off that work with the help of the larger gerontological nursing community. Further, there are opportunities to apply for some innovative grants such as conference planning grants, opportunities to apply for Pre/Post Doctoral Training Award Programs, access to educational resources and opportunities and access to over 300 gerontological nursing leaders. How does membership happen? The requirements are relatively simple in that the University or Organization must show an interest and/or expertise in gerontological nursing and a commitment to the field of gerontological nursing. We are seeking applications from Institutions that have both current experience and future potential to build the next generation of gerontological nurses; have some capacity and interest in gerontological research, practice and education; and meet generally accepted criteria of excellence in nursing. The cost of membership is an annual dues of $3000 dollars.
