Age-related hearing loss (ARHL, presbycusis) is an unfortunate consequence of normal aging. Recent estimates suggest that more than 30% of individuals over 60 years of age and more than 50% of individuals over 70 years of age suffer from some form of hearing loss [1]. This means that the hearing of millions of older adults worldwide is affected to an extent that impedes their ability to communicate meaningfully in everyday environments, leading to withdrawal of participation in professional, social and familial situations [2]. At present, amplification with hearing aids is the first and often the only form of rehabilitation available to people with ARHL, yet according to the World Health Organization (Fact sheet No 300, 2014; http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs300/en/), current global production of hearing aids meets
