Message From the Meeting Chairs Dear Colleagues We wish you a warm welcome to the 2014 IOF Regionals: 5th Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting. The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association (TOA) are proud to host this important scientific meeting in Taipei, with an expected attendance of over 1000 participants from all regions of the world. Over 150 abstracts have been submitted from more than 30 countries. Now in its 5th year, this Meeting once again offers delegates a high-quality programme with renowned international experts as speakers and workshop leaders. There will be 9 plenary sessions and 10 different Meet-the-Expert sessions covering the latest clinical advances in the field. In addition to a wide range of topics related to important clinical aspects of osteoporosis management and fractures, we will also focus on related topics such as bone and diabetes, bariatric surgery and bone, nutrition, osteoporosis in men, orthopaedic trends and secondary fracture prevention. This Meeting is recognized as a top venue for the presentation of new research from the Asia-Pacific (and beyond). We look forward to presenting the latest research in numerous oral and poster presentations. As at previous meetings, we will once again present the ‘IOF Young Investigator Awards’ to the top five ranked abstracts by authors under 40 years of age. With these awards, IOF seeks to encourage and support the work of young and talented researchers in the field. IOF would also like to take this opportunity to thank our industry partners for their support and participation. We encourage delegates to visit the informative exhibition and attend the satellite symposia presented by leading companies in the field. As revealed in the landmark Asia-Pacific Regional Audit published by IOF in December 2013, the region must prepare for an enormous increase in musculoskeletal diseases and fragility fractures. A forum such as the Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting is an important component in the fight against these diseases. It offers an ideal opportunity to exchange new ideas and information with colleagues from all parts of the world. By learning about new clinical advances and the latest research, delegates will gain valuable insights and knowledge that will directly benefit patient care and fracture prevention. We hope that, in addition to maximizing the educational value of the Meeting, you will also make the most of your stay in Taipei. This city of fascinating contrasts between modern and traditional has a unique multicultural feel and offers unparalleled opportunity for sightseeing, shopping and dining. We wish you an enjoyable and enriching experience.

International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is the only worldwide organization dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and musculoskeletal diseases. It is a Swiss not-for-profit Foundation acting as an umbrella organization bringing together all stakeholders; including, scientists, physicians, patient and medical societies as well as corporate partners interested in osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and bone health. IOF has three membership committees including the Committee of National Societies (CNS) representing 225 member societies in 97 countries or regions, the Committee of Scientific Advisors (CSA) represented by 125 thought leaders from around the world and the Committee of Corporate Advisors (CCA), comprised of 27 companies interested in bone health. In addition, with a new individual membership option, IOF is also extending its outreach to the general public and health professionals around the world. IOF organizes its operations from its headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, as well as regional offices in Buenos Aires, Dubai and Singapore. It mobilizes the global osteoporosis movement on World Osteoporosis Day October 20, every year. Part of IOF’s mission is to support and enhance the work of its member societies which is reflected in many programmes and projects, including the IOF Worldwide Conference of Osteoporosis Patient Societies, held every two years. IOF holds the annual WCO-IOF-ESCEO World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases as well as regional scientific meetings, often in partnership with other organizations. These include the IOF Regionals in the Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Middle East & Africa regions. Together with the ISCD, IOF also offers an increasingly popular international training course, ‘Osteoporosis: Essentials of Densitometry, Diagnostic and Management’. IOF’s scientific publication portfolio includes the journals Osteoporosis International, Calcified Tissue International and Musculoskeletal Research, Archives of Osteoporosis, and Progress in Osteoporosis, the latter being a free access online review journal which is available at www.iofbonehealth.org/pio. IOF REGIONALIZATION PROGRAMME IOF has a strong regional programme which enhances collaboration among the member associations at the regional level. The programme helps IOF to better serve specific local needs and contributes to the dynamic growth of IOF and the strengthening of osteoporosis associations worldwide. Essential elements of the programme are the ‘IOF Regionals’. These regular regional scientific events help to raise standards of osteoporosis education in the regions and provide an international high-profile forum for local research. They also give many clinicians the opportunity to attend high quality international clinical meetings ‘close to home’. Another important element is the election of Regional Advisory Councils (RAC) from among the full member societies in the regions.

Regional epidemiological audits – ASIA-PACIFIC AUDIT 2013 IOF has published several landmark reports which collect evidence of the growing burden of osteoporosis around the world and outline the actions that need to be taken to reduce the human and socio-economic costs of the disease in individual countries and across the region. The reports are valuable policy tools which generate media attention while energizing research and health authority outreach in the regions. In 2013 IOF published an update to the ‘Asian Audit’ of 2009.The ‘AsiaPacific Regional Audit: Epidemiology, costs and burden of osteoporosis in 2013’ presents new data and includes information for Australia and New Zealand. In collaboration with the national societies, and sourced from recent literature, the update shines a spotlight on current epidemiological trends in osteoporosis in each of the featured countries. Previous Audits include the ‘Eastern Europe & Central Asia Regional Audit’ (2010), the ‘Middle East & Africa Regional Audit – Epidemiology, costs & burdens of osteoporosis in 2011’, and the ‘Latin America Audit’ (2012). THE asia-pacific REGION IOF counts 33 patient, medical and scientific member societies in 16 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. IOF has appointed Ms. Rhonda Ng ([email protected]) as IOF Asia-Pacific Regional Coordinator. About the Co-organizers Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association The Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association (TOA) was established in 1997 and is comprised of experts who raise awareness of bone health and the prevention of fragility fractures among both health-care professionals and the general public. Members consist of orthopaedic surgeons, gynecologists, endocrinologists, rheumatologists, geriatricians, general internists, family physicians, physiatrists, radiologists and researchers from basic sciences as well as public health. Presidents – rotating from three major disciplines (orthopaedic, Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association gynecology and medicine) – are elected every other year to lead this well [email protected] recognized non-governmental organization (NGO) in the prevention, www.toa1997.org.tw diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. TOA has been working hand in hand with the Health Promotion Administration and IOF to achieve mutual missions and goals. Through its annual scientific meeting, educational and certification courses for health professionals, patient health campaigns, as well as media events, TOA has ensured osteoporosis features high on the national health-care agenda.
