Introduction for the special edition

The 51st Annual Meeting of the International Association of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT2013) took place in Funchal – Madeira, Portugal, on September 2–6, 2013. Simultaneously, we organized the 1st Meeting of Forensic Toxicologists in Portuguese and Spanish and was the first time that this important scientific event took place in Portugal, involving nearly 600 participants from 56 countries and five continents. 348 scientific papers were presented, with 12 keynote lectures, 81 oral presentations and 255 posters, in nine different scientific areas (Alcohol, Drugs & Medicines: driving and sexual assaults; Clinical Toxicology, Experimental Toxicology & Therapeutic Drug Monitoring; Toxicogenomics & Drug metabolism and kinetics; Occupational Toxicology: workplace drug testing & Doping control; Postmortem Toxicology; Alternative Matrices in Forensic and Clinical Toxicology; Emerging substances and analytical techniques in Forensic Toxicology; Quality Assurance & Accreditation; Free topics). We ensured that this was a top-quality state-of-the-art scientific event and we thank all the participants for the rich and numerous works submitted to our meeting, and our Scientific Committee for helping us improving the quality of all the presentations. We sincerely thank the organizing and scientific committees for their excellent work, never forgetting that this meeting would have never been be possible without the support of our sponsors. We sincerely thank you all for embracing with us this meeting. We can never foresee the future, however, the first step to get what we want in life is to truly know what we want, always believing that today is the tomorrow, that everyone dreamed yesterday. When we do not know where to go, we never go too far. In 2006 we started to dream of a new project, a possibility to embrace the love of TIAFT and the desire to receive all the colleagues and friends of this association in our country. The idea of organizing this meeting was first discussed at the TIAFT meeting in Slovenia. The way was not always easy, but we always believed that the taste of something more challenging would lead us to success, value, recognition, happiness, and fulfill our dream. St. Augustine, one of the most important Fathers of the church once said ‘‘It is better to limp on a defined way rather than walk a great distance outside it, because who limps along the way but proceed it slowly, approaches the goal... while those who follow it out, as faster as they run, as faster as they walk away from the target.’’ Altogether, this Forensic Science International special edition should be a valuable source of information for all readers with an interest in forensic toxicology and related fields. We sincerely express our appreciation to all the authors and reviewers that contributed for the progress in research and practice of Forensic and Clinical Toxicology.
