Introducing the Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health

This issue represents a landmark in the history of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. The production of the Journal has been taken over by NISC Pty Ltd. Until this issue, the Editor took responsibility for all stages of the production of the Journal, including correspondence with authors after acceptance of a contribution; liaising with the Medical Graphics Department of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town (UCT) about layout; checking the final product before printing; physically delivering the final version of the Journal to the printers (the University Documentation Management Services at UCT); and finally mailing the Journal to those on the mailing list. This final step involved loading the journals, obediently collated into bundles of 50 as required by the Post Office for bulk mailing, into his car and delivering them to the Post Office. As of this issue, the Editor will be relieved of all these responsibilities, which will allow more time for editorial tasks of a more intellectual and managerial nature. There are a number of other benefits of our contract with NISC. The physical appearance of the Journal has been transformed, so that it is now far more attractive and professional. NISC will engage in more vigorous and consistent marketing efforts than was previously possible. The Journal will be available in hard copy and also electronically. Renewed efforts will be made to ensure that the Journal is included in bibliographic databases, besides those in which it is currently included (PSYCHLIT and the Family Studies Database). All these benefits will make the Journal a more attractive option when authors consider where to submit their work for publication, and result in a larger number of high quality submissions. We have taken the opportunity of making some other important changes to the Journal, the most obvious of which is the name. The Journal was previously entitled the Southern African Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health. We have decided to omit the words ‘Southern African’ from the title. This was partly because the title was previously too long and cumbersome. Of greater importance is that we want to position the journal internationally so that it will advance the discipline of child and adolescent mental health, but from our base here in southern Africa. We have appointed an Editorial Assistant, Loraine Townsend, who previously worked in a similar capacity at the South African Journal of Psychology. She has made an enormous contribution so far with the production of this issue of the Journal. Her appointment will achieve a more rapid and efficient administration of the editorial process than has been the case in the past couple of years. We have invited four people to serve as Associate Editors. Each will take prime responsibility for a specific section of the Journal. The Associate Editors: Mr Willem de Jager, UCT (Book Reviews); Professor Anthony Pillay, University of Natal (Clinical Perspectives); Professor Brian Robertson, UCT (Editorials and Letters); and Dr Soraya Seedat, University of Stellenbosch (Reviews). The Editor will continue to take responsibility for the Original Research section of the Journal, and also the final responsibility for the entire Journal. Finally, we have replaced the Editorial Board with an Advisory Board. Without exception, the Advisory Board members are highly respected internationally for their contributions to the field of child and adolescent mental health. They will assist with the peer review process, provide advice on the content and policies of the Journal, solicit contributions, and raise the profile of the Journal internationally. I would like to thank key individuals and groups who have been enthusiastically supportive of all these changes. They include the Chair (Professor Leana Uys) and members of the outgoing Editorial Board; the disbanded Editorial Committee; and the Chair (Professor Dee Luiz) and members of the National Committee of the South African Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions. Without their active encouragement, we would not have been able to embark on this exciting new course. Alan J Flisher Editor
