International Young Investigator Award 2013 In 2006, the Acta Paediatrica Foundation launched the International Young Investigator Award, which is aimed at first authors who are not older than 40 years of age. Every year, the winning candidate is selected by the Chairman of the Foundation and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal from the papers published during the year. A similar award for Swedish authors is given by the Swedish Paediatric Society, as detailed in the April 2014 issue of Acta Paediatrica (1).

I am delighted to announce that the 2013 Acta Paediatrica International Young Investigator Award goes to Dr Sirkku €nen from the University of Turku in Finland, whose article entitled ‘Predictive value of neonatal brain MRI on the Seta neurodevelopmental outcome of preterm infants by 5 years of age’ which was published in the May 2013 issue of Acta Paediatrica (2). The study, in collaboration with Leena Haataja, Riitta Parkkola, Annika Lind, Liisa Lehtonen and the PIPARI Study Group, focused on the brains of 217 very low gestational aged infants. The study compared magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans taken at term equivalent age with neurodevelopment at 5 years of chronological age. This study showed that normal or minor pathologies observed in the MRI images taken during infancy were found to predict good developmental capacity in almost 100% of the infants at the age of five. When the MRI findings were pathological, 75% of the children had developed cognitive impairment at 5 years of age. The findings demonstrate that a normal MRI in this patient group is likely to provide great relief for the parents, while pathological MRI findings indicate that intervention is needed.
