INT J LANG COMMUN DISORD, MARCH–APRIL VOL. 50, NO. 2, 143

2015,

Editorial Steven Bloch University College London (E-mail: [email protected])

I would like to begin with a heartfelt thank you to Katerina Hilari. In her role as Editor-in-Chief for the past decade, Katerina has continued to develop International Journal of Language & Communication Disorders, attracting high-quality manuscripts but also refining the processes and mechanisms that enable an international journal to succeed. Both Katerina and Nicola Botting have built a strong editorial team ethos over the years, enabling the journal to enhance its impact and reputation. Over the past 12 months the journal has received submissions from over 30 countries. This is a considerable achievement. It goes without saying that I am delighted to be taking on Editorship of the journal. It is such an honour and privilege to walk in the shoes of so many distinguished clinical academics who, right from the start with Dr Muriel Morley in 1966, have endeavoured to ensure that speech and language therapy is informed and, indeed, challenged by the best available evidence. Many past editors remain on the Advisory Editorial Board and are a fundamental source of wisdom and guidance. The editorial team is also enhanced through the ongoing commitment of an impressive Executive Editorial Board, members of which represent worldwide expertise and knowledge from a range of disciplines. Perhaps the most significant contribution comes from our reviewers across the globe who provide an invaluable service to the journal and its submitting authors. Thank you to everyone who makes the IJLCD such a special journal.

For this year’s 50th volume and beyond the journal will continue to represent the diversity of topics in the field of communication disorders and disability. It will also continue to uphold high values of research integrity and clinical relevance, irrespective of methodology or philosophical position. To this end there will be a stronger emphasis on the actual or potential clinical impact for all papers accepted. Perhaps the most significant change will be a fast evolving adaptation to the maturing digital age. Developments in social media and digital technology are shaping how we produce and consume research and this will be reflected through the journal’s online presence with new features for authors and readers alike. I am looking forward to much greater dialogue between authors and readers facilitated through online discussions, webinars etc. I also welcome news ideas and comments to make the journal even better. My inbox is always open. Finally, I want to recognize the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists’ invaluable role in the past, present and future of the journal. Through its evolution from the Journal of the College of Speech Therapists to a British, European and, finally, international publication, the journal has always been an academic home for speech and language therapists, related disciplines, and those working with people with communication disorders. Long may this continue.
