Make sure you are properly covered if you work in cosmetic surgery, writes Jonathan Dyson

Insurance is essential Among all the sectors of UK healthcare, cosmetic surgery poses some of the biggest challenges for nurses, with the most significant issue being professional indemnity. The wide range of nurse responsibilities in the sector intensifies these challenges. Association for Perioperative Practice vice-president Mona Guckian Fisher says: ‘Aesthetic nurse practitioners occupy an advanced practitioner role.’ Katie Phillips is clinic manager at The Harley Medical Group’s City of London clinic. Ms Phillips says that her responsibilities begin with a consultation ensuring the patient feels they have been listened to and given all the necessary information. If a patient decides to go ahead, she would then support them through the whole process. The group provides all its cosmetic surgery nurses and aesthetic practitioners with insurance. However, Ms Guckian Fisher says that for many nurses in the sector, securing appropriate professional indemnity can be a challenge because much of the sector lies outside the NHS, with many small clinics often run by one practitioner. From July, the RCN excluded aesthetic practice from its indemnity scheme because of high claims risks associated with aesthetic practice. A spokesperson said: Aesthetic practitioners need to

These programmes help individuals to develop critical understanding of the strategy, policy and legislation related to equality, diversity and inclusion, and analyse examples of institutional and societal inequalities. The courses are primarily online. bit.ly/diversity-bradford E-learning Wound care company Crawford Healthcare has launched a free, online education programme for nurses. You care for them and carry out intimate procedures at a time when they are most vulnerable.’ Her biggest challenge in more recent times was the loss of public confidence in nursing because of care failings at Stafford Hospital. ‘Public perception was that there was poor care. It has been hard work to rebuild that confidence. We have done some work with the local media so the public can vote for nurses of the year. We have also worked hard to ensure good standards of care.’ And her advice for nurses with ambitions to be a nurse director? ‘You need to be courageous and to remember that decisions affect patients, carers and loved ones. Nurse directors are in a privileged position, but the most important thing is to enjoy it’ NS

ensure that their employing organisation has appropriate indemnity arrangements for them, or they should source their own cover.’ The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) announced that from July this year, UK nurses and midwives must hold indemnity to be NMC registered. ‘While the insurance does not need to be individually held by the nurse or midwife, it is their responsibility to ensure that appropriate cover is in force by their employer,’ the NMC says NS Jonathan Dyson is a freelance journalist RESOURCES NMC’s professional indemnity arrangement tinyurl.com/NMCPII RCN indemnity scheme tinyurl.com/RCNPII
