Innovation centre to help make fish an even bigger business in Scotland A NEW innovation centre for aquaculture has been launched in Scotland to bring together industry and research with the aim of growing the contribution that aquaculture makes to the Scottish economy. The Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC) is the fifth innovation centre to be launched in Scotland. The six-year, £124 million innovation centre programme aims to create sustainable communities of universities, businesses and others around sectors of importance to the 60 | Veterinary Record | July 19, 2014
Scottish economy. The SAIC will have its headquarters at the University of Stirling and will have a local delivery centre in the western Highlands. The centre has been funded by the Scottish Funding Council, in partnership with Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, with £11 million of public funding being matched by the Scottish aquaculture industry. The SAIC will focus on areas such as fish and shellfish health and welfare, feeding and nutrition, and breeding and stock
improvement, with a view to contributing towards the increased production of safe and sustainable food. A recently published independent report indicated that aquaculture currently contributes £1.4 billion to the Scottish economy and sustains 8000 jobs in Scotland. The industry estimates that every additional 10,000 tonnes of salmon add £96 million to the Scottish economy. doi: 10.1136/vr.g4652
