An infection prevention nurse has turned his hand to board game design to help health professionals understand and manage Clostridium difficile. Gareth Pierce Jones, who works at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, north Wales, has created Game of Stools. The game – whose name is inspired by the popular TV fantasy series Game of Thrones – sees players take turns asking and answering questions about C. difficile as they move round the board, trying to avoid ending up in isolation with the infection. Trials involving 85 healthcare staff showed 98% of participants answered more questions correctly after playing.

uch more needs to be done to ensure a greater number of black and minority ethnic (BME) nurses take on executive positions in the NHS, says the RCN. More than a year after a major report highlighted BME under-representation at leadership level in the NHS, exact figures on BME staff in senior posts are still not known. Neither NHS England, NHS Digital nor NHS Improvement could provide statistics on the number of BME nurses in

director roles, when requested by Nursing Standard. Roger Kline, who steps down as director of NHS Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) engagement and research this week, said there were ‘not nearly enough’ BME nurse directors in post and the number was unlikely to be more than a handful. Mr Kline said the lack of knowledge was an ongoing issue, given that 2016 WRES research was unable to ascertain these numbers due to unreliable data provided by trusts.

He said: ‘There isn’t a single consistent breakdown of the ethnicity of nurse directors, but the numbers are tiny. ‘There has been a bit of an effort to provide a pipeline, but there is no magic fix that will suddenly create lots of BME nurse directors.’ He said diverse leadership was more open to self-criticism than a monocultural one. ‘If 25% of band 5 nurses are BME, but only 3% are band 8c, d or e – then that kind of gradient suggests there might be talent being lost on the way.’ He said it was critical to have organisational leadership that is representative of the workforce it leads and the population it serves. ‘Without this, junior nurses with ambition and talent coming through an
