INDUCTION AND RECOVERY WITH ENFLURANE AND HALOTHANE IN PAEDIATRIC ANAESTHESIA M . J . M . GOVAERTS AND M . SANDERS SUMMARY

One hundred and four infants and children were included in a comparative study of anaesthesia with either enflurane or halothane. Induction and recovery were significantly shorter with enflurane than with halothane. There was little difference between the drugs in respsct of their postoperative sequelae.

PATIENTS

One hundred and four children were allocated randomly to two equal groups. One group received enflurane anaesthesia (group E) and the other received halothane anaesthesia (group H). The ages ranged from 105 days to 13 yr (mean: 54.7 months in group E; 55.7 months in Group H). The weight range was 5.2-30.0 kg (mean: 16.0 in group E; and 16.9 in group H). There were 35 females and 69 males. The Chi-square tests suggests that there was no significant difference between the two groups in respect of these data or with regard to the type of operation or duration of anaesthesia (range: 10-244 min; mean: 62.4 in group E, 54.9 in group H) (table I).

ANAESTHESIA

Some of the patients received pentobarbitone 5 mg/kg 60 min before induction, and all were given Thalamonal 0.05 ml/kg (fentanyl 0.05 mg/ml and dehydroTABLE I.
