In a recent study, Carlisle et al. determined the hepatic blood flow in 10 healthy volunteers, measuring the blood flow in the portal vein and proper hepatic artery by means of duplex sonography [1]. We examined the portal vessels of 5 healthy volunteers by duplex sonography (3 male, 2 female, 25-29 years). At the same time, we determined the global hepatic blood flow in the same individuals using indocyanine green (ICG) clearance [2] and compared the results of both examinations. In addition, we studied with both methods the effect of propranolol 80 mg p.o. given to the same volunteers. Our mean values without medication measured by duplex sonography showed a good correlation with the results published by Carlisle et al. [1] (Table 1).
