In Reference to Extracapsular Dissection for Benign Parotid Tumors: A Meta-Analysis

Dear Editor: I congratulate Albergotti and colleagues1 on their excellent meta-analysis that reconfirms the work of the Manchester group and others as to the safety of extracapsular dissection (ECD).2–5 It has been a long process to gain acceptance of this technique on this side of the Atlantic, the reasons of which are for another discussion. I would like to comment on the authors work and interject some of my own experiences with this technique, which is now over 10 years and comprises over 50 patients, the largest series of ECD in North America.6 We salivary gland surgeons have been doing ECD for many years. Extracapsular dissection has been the technique usually employed to remove deep lobe parotid tumors, tumors of the parapharyngeal space, and tumors of the submaxillary gland.
