EDITOR’S MESSAGE

IN PRAISE OF….

Anne Manton, PhD, APRN, PMHNP-BC, FAEN, FAAN, Bourne, MA

ow often do we take the time to celebrate each other? My response would be “Not often enough,” and that’s what this editorial is about. Often the amazing work we do is taken for granted by society as a whole, by our non-nursing colleagues, and indeed even by ourselves. We deliver exceptional care as a matter of routine. What do you think would happen if we high-fived each other when a difficult intravenous insertion was accomplished, when we recognized a life-threatening situation and intervened, or when we successfully de-escalated a situation with an agitated patient or family member? Do we even recognize these successes as the extraordinary achievements they are? I would like to use this space to recognize our emergency nursing colleagues whose efforts benefit all of us. I want to begin with the ENA members who give of their time and talent to serve on ENA committees and work groups. Member involvement is key to keeping ENA vibrant and the valued resource it is. The persons involved with the recent revisions to the TNCC and ENPC courses and the instructors who teach

these courses nationwide deserve recognition and our gratitude for their extraordinary efforts. Their contributions to ENA and emergency nursing have been and continue to be significant. I would like to praise and celebrate some particular ENA members whom I have come to appreciate more and more during these past few months because of the outstanding work they do year round. I speak of the JEN Senior Editors and, very importantly, the JEN Section Editors. These colleagues of ours work tirelessly to bring high-quality, up-to-date information to emergency nurses everywhere. Although the valuable result of their work is evident in each issue of JEN, as is the case with so many other aspects of emergency nursing, their individual efforts, commitment, talent, and willingness to share ideas and knowledge are too often overlooked and taken for granted. Please take a moment to look at the listing of these outstanding contributors under the headings Editorial Board and Section Editors on the masthead in this issue and thank them for their good work. Many other persons deserve our recognition for the outstanding work they do every day and in every emergency nursing role. I can’t include all of the praiseworthy people here, but YOU can make sure they are recognized. Notice and praise the accomplishments of colleagues—even the small successes. We have been justifiably concerned with lateral violence and bullying in the workplace, but I believe if we begin right now to look for opportunities to offer positive affirmations to our colleagues on a regular basis, we can minimize those negative behaviors. So, colleagues, I praise you, I celebrate you, and I am honored to be one of you!
